Bundesliga: Werder Bremen Point Loss – Reaction

After the unfortunate draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen went on the offensive. As in the days before the start of the second half of the season in the Bundesliga, he was asked again about the supposedly bad mood in the team.

“We didn’t have a fire, we just had a good atmosphere within the group with the coaching team,” said Steffen. He made his irritation clear by emphasizing his every word.

They were “not in such a good mood because we didn’t win games,” he continued. “It’s something that depresses a mood.” Everything else is a false perception.

3:3 against Frankfurt didn’t improve the mood

But it was also clear that the last-minute 3:3 against the Champions League participants from Hesse did not improve the mood. Not even for him. After the game, Steffen spoke of two lost points. “The victory was there, but we won’t take it,” said the 56-year-old.

Bremen are now seven games without a win. After 17 games they have 18 points and the danger zone in the table is not far away. “We are all aware that we can have two, three, four points more,” said Steffen.

The next opponents Bayer Leverkusen (away) and TSG Hoffenheim (home) do not exactly increase the hope of ending the negative series in a timely manner.

Against Eintracht Frankfurt, Ansgar Knauff’s equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time was particularly annoying. “The headwind is there. And things like that happen,” said midfielder Jens Stage.

Also positive aspects in the Werder game

The Bremen team were also able to take positive things from the game. Twice they were behind – the first time after just 50 seconds – and twice they came back. And they even took the lead. The fact that Stuttgart winter loanee and storm hopeful Jovan Milosevic made it 3-2 in his first home game for Bremen was another promising aspect.

Birthday boy Samuel Mbangula (22) revived the attack after coming on as a substitute, hit good standards and applied for more playing time. Overall, Bremen also impressed at times and combined well.

Justin Njinmah – the scorer to make it 1-1 – was hardly able to be controlled by the Eintracht defense with his speed, but he could have scored three goals instead of one.

Milosevic gives hope for more

Apart from the result, the whole game was positive, said Stage, who scored the goal (78th) to make it 2-2. “We had a lot of good moments with the ball, without the ball. Super intensity, super fighting spirit,” he listed. That was no consolation for his coach. “At the moment the disappointment is simply greater than the good feeling that we can create chances and score goals,” he said on the TV channel Sky.

A newcomer to Bremen was able to go home with a smile. After his first 16 minutes of the home game for Werder, Milosevic took the lead in the 80th minute – and brought the Weser Stadium to a boil. The emotions after the goal were “one of the best feelings of my life,” said the Serb. There was only one thing missing for a perfect evening: a win.
