The Cleveland Browns fired head coach Kevin Stefanski on Monday after six seasons.
He is the fourth head coach to lose his job in the National Football League (NFL) this season, following Brian Callahan (Tennessee Titans), Brian Daboll (New York Giants) and Raheem Morris (Atlanta Falcons).
The Browns won their final two games to finish the season with a 5-12 record, including a 20-18 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Stefanski, 43, was twice named NFL head coach of the year by the Associated Press. He led the Browns to the playoffs in 2020 and 2023.
The Browns’ 48-37 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AL playoff game was the Ohio team’s first since 1993. Ironically, Stefanski was not on the Browns sidelines for that game after testing positive for COVID-19. He watched the match at home.
Stefanski is the sixth head coach to be fired since owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam bought the Browns in 2012. The five coaches hired by the Haslams have compiled a 73-139-1 season record since 2013, the penultimate record in the NFL during that span.
