Every year since 2019, the story has been the same for the Buffalo Bills. The NFL’s AFC East has been a thorn in the side of teams in the regular season, consistently finishing the season with a positive winning percentage and making the playoffs. But despite this success, the playoffs were always heartbreaking for the Bills, and the team consistently failed to advance to the Super Bowl.
For a long time, many attributed that to the Kansas City Chiefs’ dominance, as the Chiefs have led the way in four of the Bills’ seven playoff knockouts since 2019, but the same story hasn’t unfolded this year as the Chiefs failed to advance to the postseason. In fact, many of the AFC’s powerhouses didn’t, so the story became that this was the year the Bills had to prove their worth and make a run, especially with reigning MVP Josh Allen at quarterback. But they failed again, losing 33-30 to the Denver Broncos over the weekend, and of course there are bound to be consequences…
Coach Sean McDermott, who had led the Bills since 2017, was fired. That’s pretty surprising considering the Bills haven’t missed the playoffs in seven seasons and haven’t had a losing record, but their ambitions were higher, and although Allen is still in his prime, the owners decided a coaching change would be best for the bride-to-be this time around.
In response to the firing, Bills owner Terry Pegula released a statement filled with spelling errors, saying: “Sean has helped change the mindset of this organization and has been instrumental in getting the Bills to the playoffs on a consistent basis. I admire all of the hard work, loyalty and attention to detail he has shown for this team and the community.”
As for what’s next for the Bills, general manager Brandon Beane (who plans to remain with the team) is tasked with finding a new head coach.
