The Göttingen women defeated Eimsbütteler TV with 85:60. A decisive 15-0 run brought the preliminary decision in the third quarter.
Göttingen – Even after the 15th matchday of the second women’s basketball league, the question remains: Who wants and can stop the BG 74 Veilchen Ladies on their way to the championship after their 15th win with 85:60 (43:30) against Eimsbütteler TV? In principle, coach Ruzica Dzankic’s team can only have the ambition to finish the points series unbeaten.
Sophia Phillips and Annika Oevermann, whose twin sister Meike tore a ligament during training, opened the game with a three-pointer to make it 6-0 in front of a brilliant backdrop of 620 spectators, many of whom were elementary school students with free tickets. It took 6:12 minutes before the guests scored their first basket to make it 2:12. Due to their strong defense, the BG team only allowed Eimsbüttel five points in the first quarter and ended it with a 21:7 lead.
“In the second quarter we weren’t disciplined enough and let the opponent come into the game,” complained Dzankic. And the Hamburg team won this quarter with a score of 23:22. In the third quarter, the hosts had some bad shooting luck and some lapses in concentration, meaning that TV was even able to reduce the score to 44:50 by just six points.
“If we implement our game plan consistently, we can hardly be held,” said the BG 74 coach. Her team did this and implemented it at the end of the third and beginning of the last quarter, which was: turbo basketball and hardly allowing anything on defense. A 15-0 run across quarters was the game-decider after the Violets pulled ahead from 52:47 to 67:47 after 33 minutes. The weakening of strength at Hamburg was also noticeable, as they mainly operated with a seven-man rotation, which then ran out of steam, so that the BG 74 still had a befitting result of plus 25.
