When IFK Göteborg started the season at the beginning of last week, both Marcus Berg and Oscar Wendt were there, even though their contracts had expired.
This weekend it became official that the duo will remain at the club. Something sports manager Hannes Stiller is very positive about.
– After their playing careers ended, both have adjusted and grown into our organization very well. I think it is important for IFK Gothenburg to find people who are very dedicated and who will hopefully be here over time. Having them here for another year initially is very good for us, says Stiller.
The new agreements are valid through 2026.
– It’s a dialogue we had along the way. I can understand that it sounds like a short time and that we don’t believe them. But it is not so.
According to Stiller, everyone agreed to take a year at a time.
– Everyone is quite flexible in what they do and want to land exactly in what they have to do. That’s why we jointly chose to stick to one year. Now we can evaluate in the meantime and see if you have ended up right. And see if we use our skills in the best way and then see what tasks there may be in the future.
Berg is now entering his third season on the management staff, while Wendt is starting his second in the sporting management. In connection with the contract extension, the club also announced that Wendt, who has completed coaching training, will have an expanded role with a focus on younger players.
– He will be able to join and coach them on an individual basis in other matters that happen outside the field. For example, in what the process of becoming an elite player can look like. After all, he has a fantastic career and knows what it takes to get all the way out. Having him convey this to our younger players is a huge asset.
