Bill Belichick will not enter the Football Hall of Fame in 2026.
According to network information ESPNthe legendary coach would have been passed over in his first year of eligibility.
In a vote held earlier this month, Belichick reportedly failed to receive at least 80 percent of the votes needed to enter Canton. Belichick would have needed at least 40 of the 50 votes to be admitted to the Temple. He was reportedly informed of the committee’s decision last Friday.
Now 73 years old and now the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA, Belichick had a legendary career in the NFL.
Belichick has eight Super Bowl rings, including six from his work as head coach of the New England Patriots.
In the regular season, he had a record of 333 wins and 178 losses including the playoffs. His 333 victories place him second in history behind Don Shula’s 347.
Belichick left New England with records that will be virtually impossible for any head coach to match.
He won 17 division titles, the most for a head coach in NFL history. He also won nine conference championships, the most in the Super Bowl era.
In total, Belichick has appeared in 12 Super Bowls and his 21 winning seasons as a head coach are surpassed only by George Halas (40), Shula (33), Curly Lambeau (33) and Tom Landry (29).
According to sources from ESPNthe cheating scandals that marked his time with the Patriots could explain his omission despite his legendary career.
There were many reactions to this more than “controversial” decision by the Hall of Fame. Former star defensive end and now CBS football analyst, JJ Watt couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I must not read well. This must not be the real Hall of Fame. There isn’t a world where Bill Belichick isn’t a Hall of Famer in his first year of eligibility,” he wrote on X.
As for Belichick himself, sources confirmed to ESPN that he has difficulty accepting the voters’ decision.
People who spoke with the coach over the weekend described Belichick as “perplexed” and “disappointed” that he failed to garner the support of at least 80 percent of the Hall of Fame committee.
