BBL: Jena Signs McNair After Osobor Injury

As of: January 7, 2026 10:10 a.m

Since the serious injury to top scorer Great Osobor, there has been a gap in the center position at Science City Jena. A replacement from Slovenia has now been hired in Will McNair. The American is set to make his BBL debut shortly.

As the Thuringians announced on Tuesday evening (January 6th), McNair signed a contract until the end of the season. The 2.10 meter tall center comes from the Slovenian first division club Olimpija Ljubljana and is intended to compensate for the loss of Great Osobor. Jena’s Spanish top scorer tore a cruciate ligament during an international match against Georgia at the end of November and will not be able to play again this season.

McNair should help directly

“It was important for us to sign a center who has already played this season and has rhythm,” explained Science City head coach Björn Harmsen. Just a few days ago, McNair played his last game in Slovenia and is therefore full of energy. The 25-year-old American is scheduled to play for the current table 14th for the first time on Thursday (January 8th). of the BBL in the home game against the Rostock Seawolves. “He will definitely give us size, physicality and stability, which we have been missing under the baskets in the last few weeks,” Harmsen is convinced. Nevertheless, it obviously takes time “to fully integrate it.”

Will McNair is scheduled to make his debut for Jena on Thursday.

Osobor’s failure hit Jena hard. In December there was one defeat after another. It was only last Saturday that the BBL newcomer was able to stop the free fall and celebrate again for the first time after five lost games in a thrilling East duel at Syntainics MBC.
