On January 24th, SV Blau-Weiß Neustadt took part with two players in the youth badminton tournament in the U17 age group in Gera. Lynn Kraft and Johanna Oertel competed in both doubles and women’s singles, gaining valuable competition experience and points.
The two opened the tournament day together in doubles. The first game of the day was a bit bumpy and unfortunately was lost after three hard-fought sets. However, Lynn and Johanna did not let this discourage them: in the second game they showed a significant increase in performance and won the game confidently in two good sets. In the third double game there was little to be achieved – the game was narrowly lost. In the end there was a solid sixth place, which well reflects the pairing’s potential.
This was followed by the women’s singles U17. Both players started strong and each won their first singles. This meant they reached the top half of the tournament and played for the top positions. In the following matches, however, Lynn and Johanna had to admit defeat in both the second game and the subsequent placement game for fifth place. In the end this meant seventh place in the individual for both of them.
Even if it wasn’t enough for the medals this time, the development is clearly pointing in the right direction. The gap to the top places is getting smaller, and with further training it is only a matter of time before people are knocking on the door there too.
In retrospect, it became clear what needs to be worked on in the coming weeks:
In doubles, there was still a lack of coordination on the field and a common understanding of the game. In the individual, the lack of precision, which is increasingly crucial in this age group, was particularly noticeable.
Overall, the tournament in Gera was an important step in the sporting development of Lynn and Johanna. With hard work, patience and consistent training, the path towards medal positions is clearly marked.
