Australian Open 2024: Teen Saves Germany from Defeat | Tennis News

Bitter day for German tennis! At the Australian Open 2026, the shoulders on which German hopes rest have finally become very rare. The trip ended early, especially for the German doubles stars. However, a youngster was able to win.

With three Grand Slam titles (1 in women’s doubles, 2 in mixed doubles), Laura Siegemund is one of the most successful German doubles players, but there will be no further coup at the Australian Open 2026. That is now certain.

One day after being eliminated from the mixed doubles, Siegemund also failed in the women’s doubles competition in the round of 16. In the round of the last 16, the German lost 3:6 and 2:6 against Su-wei Hsieh from Taiwan and Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia alongside the American Sofia Kenin.

Hsieh has already won nine Grand Slams in her career, and in 2024 alone she won the women’s and mixed doubles title in Melbourne. Last year, Hsieh/Ostapenko only missed their first joint coup down under in the final.

Tim Pütz, winner of the mixed doubles competition at the French Open 2023, like Siegemund, also has to wait for another major success. The 38-year-old narrowly failed in the round of 16 of the mixed competition with 6:4, 2:6 and 8:10 to Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic and Sem Verbeek from the Netherlands. Pütz tried his luck for the first time in Australia with the Chinese Shuai Zhang.

However, the hurdle was a high one: Siniakova/Verbeek played their only tournament together so far at Wimbledon 2025, won the title and are still undefeated.

Pütz, side by side with Kevin Krawietz, had already failed early in the men’s doubles.

Top German talent surprisingly fails

The day also brought mostly bad news for the DTB among the juniors: Qualifier Oliver Majdandzic failed in round two of the singles against the Romanian Matei Todoran (5:7, 3:6), with whom he should have also competed in the doubles shortly afterwards. However, the duo withdrew.

Meanwhile, Mariella Thamm suffered a surprising defeat in the junior singles. The German top talent, who actually mostly plays on the ITF tour, lost to the Russian Mariia Makarova 4:6 and 3:6. Thamm is still in the running in the junior doubles.

Jamie Mackenzie, however, is still holding up the German colors in the junior singles. The fifth-seeded 18-year-old won his second round game against John Bothma from South Africa 6:4 and 7:6.
