After Maria: Seidel also out of the Australian Open
The German tennis players got off to a bad start in the Australian Open in Melbourne. After Ella Seidel and Tatjana Maria were eliminated, hopes are for a duo on Tuesday.
Ella Seidel still has to wait for her first victory at a Grand Slam tournament. The 20-year-old from Hamburg lost her opening match at the Australian Open against the Russian Oxana Selechmeteva 3:6, 6:3, 0:6 and was the second German tennis player to be eliminated in the first round in Melbourne. Tatjana Maria had previously been beaten by Croatian Petra Marcinko 3:6, 5:7.
Seidel actually got off to a good start against Selechmetewa and was quickly one break ahead. After that, the North German made too many avoidable mistakes and gave up the first set. In the second round, Seidel improved, played more powerfully and managed to equalize the set. But then she lost her rhythm again and had to admit defeat after 1:47 hours.
On Tuesday, Eva Lys and Laura Siegemund still have the chance to improve the German women’s balance in Melbourne. Lys plays against Romanian Sorana Cirstea, Siegemund faces Uzbek Lyudmila Samsonowa.
