In the game for three quarters, ASVEL finally cracked and lost 69-80 against Real Madrid, for its first match without Nando De Colo.
There was no miracle for ASVEL this Tuesday at the LDLC Arena. The Villeurbannais, penultimate in the Euroleague rankings, lost 69-90 against Real Madrid, 7th, despite good resistance. It was the Rhone club’s first match since the sudden departure of Nando De Colo to Fenerbahce, and Pierric Poupet’s men showed some good things. In the first quarter, the Madrilenians of Trey Lyles (21pts), Facundo Campazzo (15pts) and former Villeurbanne Théo Maledon (9pts) started the match well, leading 7-13, but ASVEL came back little by little, to win this quarter 18-17 down to the wire.
Lyles crucifies ASVEL
On its momentum, it led for almost the entire second quarter, having a lead of up to nine points (39-30), before seeing Real return to -5 at half-time (41-36). The feat was possible for the French club, which controlled the third quarter well. Three minutes from the end of the quarter, ASVEL still led 58-50. Real came back to -2 (58-56) then ended up equalizing at the start of the last quarter (63-63). At 6’08 from the end, the score was 65-65, but the Villeurbannais cracked when Trey Lyles caught fire. The American-Canadian strong winger, who played in the NBA in Utah, Denver, San Antonio and Sacramento, scored ten points in a row for his team in 2’30, without ASVEL being able to score a single one (4 missed shots, including 3 for Thomas Heurtel, who finished at 4/11 on shots).
Next match in Vitoria
Mbaye Ndiaye stopped the bleeding by scoring a free throw, but Lyles scored another basket (66-77), sealing Madrid’s victory. Real ultimately won by eleven points, thanks in particular to 58% of 2-point skill (46 for ASVEL) and 40% of 3-point skill (31 for ASVEL). Despite Glynn Watson’s 14 points, it’s a 14th defeat in 20 games for Tony Parker’s clubwho will travel to Vitoria (16th) on Friday).
