Rumors are intensifying around Golden State as the trade deadline approaches, but not all leads are equal. While some prestigious names continue to circulate, the internal reality of the franchise imposes clear limits. Between financial constraints, injuries and locker room dynamics, the decisions to come look more complex than they seem.
Anthony Davis is one of the players regularly associated with the Warriors in recent weeks. His profile seems to tick many boxes on paper, but the latest information from the league strongly cools this hypothesis. At the same time, another internal situation, that of Jonathan Kuminga, could force Golden State to act before February 5.
According to several ESPN insiders, the idea of an exchange involving Anthony Davis is no longer on the agenda for Golden State. Anthony Slater notably explained that the franchise had no intention of exploring this avenue in the short term, due to the risks linked to the player’s health and the price to pay to recover him. Tim Bontemps agreed with this, indicating that, despite obvious theoretical compatibility, this scenario was now considered “off the table”.
Anthony Davis, an option now ruled out
The question of Draymond Green is central to this issue. To hope to attract Davis, Golden State would almost inevitably have to include its defensive leader in the discussions, a sacrifice considered too heavy given the uncertainties surrounding the interior’s return. As Anthony Slater summarized, “There is simply no appetite for this kind of bet, especially for a player who might only return around the playoffs”.
On the Dallas side, the message is also clear. According to Michael Scotto, several NBA executives expect to see Anthony Davis stay with the Mavericks beyond the deadline, barring a radical decision aimed at reducing the payroll. Davis’ wrist injury, which must still keep him away from the court for several weeks, complicates any attempt at serious negotiation in the short term.
At the same time, Golden State must manage another burning issue. Jonathan Kuminga, absent since mid-December, has officially requested an exchange. Information confirmed by Anthony Slater and Shams Charania, which places the franchise in a delicate position. Despite his athletic potential, Kuminga’s inconsistent performance severely limits the return value the Warriors can hope to obtain.
In this context, imagining a package centered on Kuminga to convince Dallas to let go of Anthony Davis appears implausible. Even adding Draymond Green, the sporting and financial balance is difficult to lean in favor of the Mavericks, especially with a player under a heavy contract whose availability remains uncertain.
