In Dallas, there is no longer a time for half-measures. Behind the cautious speeches, an in-depth reflection is required on the direction taken by the franchise and on the coherence of its medium-term project. Anthony Davis crystallizes all the questions today, in a context where each decision can reshape the future.
Arriving with the ambition of immediately strengthening the competitiveness of the team, the star interior now finds himself at the heart of much more strategic discussions. The Mavericks know that they no longer evolve on the same timeline as some of their major figures. And the calendar waits for no one.
According to several sources close to the matter, Dallas has clearly established its priorities in the transfer market. The franchise seeks above all to recover promising young prospects as well as expiring contracts, in order to regain financial flexibility. “The idea is to align the trajectory of the workforce with that of Cooper Flagg”explain well-informed observers, emphasizing the importance given to the development of the 19-year-old prodigy.
Atlanta emerges as a credible option
With this in mind, an Anthony Davis departure before the February 5 deadline is no longer taboo. Managers believe that such a movement would rebalance the sporting project, while avoiding being locked into a salary structure that is too rigid in the long term. Discussions are progressing, even if nothing has been decided yet.
Of the emphatically mentioned franchises, Atlanta appears to be the most realistic destination at this point. The Hawks have several contracts to financially balance a large-scale operation. A package including Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kennard and the young Asa Newell is notably mentioned internally, even if the exact contours remain evolving.
The name of Zaccharie Risacher, first choice in the 2024 draft, has also been circulating for several weeks. However, according to certain indiscretions, Dallas would not make this file an absolute condition. Asa Newell, whose profile is increasingly appealing to Texan decision-makers, would on the other hand be very present in the discussions, a sign of a clear desire to focus on youth.
Sportingly, the former NBA champion continues to provide solid production. In 17 games played this season, he averaged just over 20 points, nearly 11 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Respectable figures, but which do not allay all the concerns within the league. Sustainability indeed remains a central subject. Aside from the 2023-2024 season, where he played 76 games with the Lakers, Davis has not exceeded the 62-game mark since 2018-2019. A medical history that weighs heavily when assessing its real value on the market.
