Anthony Correia cannot believe that Telstar was not awarded a penalty against AZ. The White Lions narrowly lost (0-1) in the North Holland derby and did themselves a great disservice.

Correia occasionally stood in the dugout, watching in disbelief as Telstar squandered one chance after another. Jeroen Zoet managed to save the ball a few millimeters before crossing the goal line, but Milan Zonneveld took the cake.

The striker was able to run into a cross from the right, but in an incomprehensible way the striker completely ruined the opportunity. “I think I went the most crazy when I saw it again,” Correia explains afterwards ESPN. “That was really an insider.”

“Those guys don’t do it on purpose. I also just said to them: ultimately we have to take the next step and that is to reward ourselves. If we continue to play like this and we take advantage of our chances, then I wish many opponents the best of luck.”

“But if we don’t take our chances, this is the result. Well, we’re in our own hands. So we just have to do this better.” However, the arbitration did not go completely smoothly, according to Telstar’s talented head coach.

In the last few minutes of the match, Kay Tejan entered into an aerial duel with Zoet. The keeper boxed away, but Tejan landed on the ground again earlier. In an attempt to stop him, Zoet pulled – quite showily – on the striker’s shirt. The decision of the referee and the VAR? No penalty.

“There was still a penalty moment in between,” says Correia himself. He asks the reporter: “I’m curious: do you have him on camera?” He has. Correia doesn’t take long to make his judgment and starts laughing out loud.

“No, no, wait! Oh, how bad, haha! One more time, come on, one more time! I already saw it on our little camera and I thought: hmm, this looks like a penalty. Let’s see: one, two, three – no, a hundred percent penalty. Oh, man, this is bad. This really hurts.”

“We have a lot of people with a lot of cameras and they don’t see this as a penalty. Wow. Wow in big capital letters. But we are not going to blame the referee. We don’t have to talk about luck anymore. We really create a lot ourselves and we just have to do this better,” he concludes.
