Anselmino Returns: Chelsea Re-Sign Defender

The former Juventud Unida defender of Banderaló and Boca Juniors returns to the London team after his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Aarón Anselmino made headlines again in European football after Chelsea decided to execute the play-off clause and end his loan at Borussia Dortmund early, the club where he was on loan this season.

Although the defender had been sent to Germany with the aim of gaining experience in one of the most competitive leagues on the continent, in recent weeks it emerged that his return to London was directly linked to a request from Liam Rosenior, Chelsea’s new coach, who had requested to closely evaluate the Argentine centre-back in view of the restructuring of the squad.

Anselmino, barely 20 years old, had an outstanding time at Boca Juniors, a club where he finished his training and projected himself into professional football, after his time at Juventud Unida de Banderaló. His growth quickly caught the attention of Chelsea, which in 2024 made a big bet on his incorporation with a long-term contract.

After signing with the English team, the defender faced a season-long adaptation period, in which he continued training with the first team. His debut with the Blues took place in the Club World Cup, when he entered against Benfica in the round of 16 of the competition that finally had the Londoners as champions.

In mid-2025, Enzo Maresca, the then Chelsea coach, insisted that the Pampa native go on loan to Borussia Dortmund, in search of filming. In Germany, the former Boca played a total of 10 games (6 for the Bundesliga, 3 for the Champions League and 1 for the DFB Pokal), which were enough to show that he deserves a new opportunity in the Premier League.

In this context, and with the arrival of a new coaching staff in Chelsea, the club decided to recover Anselmino early, interpreting that his profile fits the football idea that it seeks to implement. The coach’s request would have been key to speeding up the decision and reincorporating him into the main squad.

The return to Stamford Bridge represents a new challenge for the Pampas defender, who will seek to consolidate himself in European football and continue taking firm steps in a career that began in the interior of the country, passed through Boca and today finds him again under the orbit of one of the most important clubs in England.
