This result surprised no one, as An Se Young showed no signs of decline, continuing to maintain the dominant position in badminton that she has held for the past two years.

After easily winning the first set 21-15, the South Korean player lost his concentration slightly in the second set, allowing Wang Zhiyi to take a significant lead of 17-11.

But faced with An Se Young’s determination, the best Chinese singles player could not resist. Despite a very close victory, Wang ultimately lost the set 22-24.

Despite his defeat, Wang Zhiyi received many applause from the audience for his fighting and tenacious spirit.

Compared to their previous confrontations, Wang showed a marked improvement despite this defeat.

Exactly a year ago, Wang also finished runner-up at the Malaysia Open after losing 17-21, 7-21 in the final to An Se Young. She even gave up in the second set.

And it was actually just one of nine times Wang lost in the BWF Series finals to this extremely strong South Korean opponent.

The 2024 Denmark Open final is the only time Wang has beaten An in a BWF final. The two have faced each other 10 times in the BWF finals, and 11 times if you include the 2022 Asian Games.

She defeated Wang Zhiyi in 10 of the 11 finals, an unchallenged domination. It is worth noting that Wang Zhiyi is currently the number one women’s badminton player in China.

It wasn’t just Wang who suffered; the entire Chinese badminton community was dealt a bad hand every time they had the misfortune of facing An Se Young.

Of An Se Young’s 35 titles, 18 were won in the final against the best Chinese badminton players, from Wang Zhiyi to Chen Yufei, including He Bingjiao, Gao Fangjie and Li Xuerui. She also beat He in the women’s singles final at the 2024 Olympics.

Chinese players have only beaten An Se Young twice in BWF finals: at the 2024 Indonesia Open (Chen Yufei) and the 2024 Denmark Open (Wang Zhiyi).

China was the premier badminton nation, long dominating all disciplines, until the emergence of An Se Young.

The South Korean first rose to the rank of world number one in August 2023 and has reigned supreme in women’s singles badminton ever since.
