Aicher in the top ten – Shiffrin’s winning streak is over
Emma Aicher is the best German at the slalom in Kranjska Gora. The in-form Swiss Camille Rast wins – and ends a fantastic series.
The German ski racers missed out on a top placing in the Kranjska Gora slalom. Emma Aicher and Lena Dürr took eighth and eleventh place following the success of the in-form Swiss Camille Rast. World champion Rast ended the remarkable winning streak of Mikaela Shiffrin, who had won the first five World Cup slaloms this winter. The American came second in Slovenia ahead of Rast’s teammate Wendy Holdener.
Rast and Shiffrin in their own league
Rast again rode with a black mourning ribbon on her arm – like when she won the giant slalom on Saturday. The 26-year-old dedicated it to the victims of the Crans-Montana fire disaster and their relatives. “This week there was a tragic accident in my hometown and I’m thinking of these families,” Rast said, remembering the 40 dead and more than 100 injured in the New Year’s Eve accident in the Swiss ski resort.
In the Kranjska Gora slalom, Rast and Shiffrin were in their own league. The duo were only 0.14 seconds apart. The gap between third-placed Holden and Shiffrin was more than 1.5 seconds.
After a weak first run, Dürr fought his way up five places with a courageous performance in the final. She was “much more active,” said the 34-year-old on ZDF. From the first goal she felt safer and therefore had more confidence. “It wasn’t all perfect, but it was a step in the right direction,” said the third-place finisher at the 2023 World Cup.
