New coach at Eintracht Frankfurt. Albert Riera will take over the position for the Eagles. After the weekend he is on the pitch for the first time.
Frankfurt – Eintracht Frankfurt makes it official: The new SGE coach is finally here. The preferred candidate, Albert Riera, will take over the position at the Bundesliga club and should stabilize the club again. The 43-year-old Spaniard will start his new job on the Main from Monday. His contract runs until June 30, 2028. Markus Krösche raves about the new coach.
Riera brings impressive references from Slovenia to Frankfurt. At NK Celje he led the club to a national cup victory in his first year and is comfortably at the top of the table with a twelve point lead in the current season. In addition, under his leadership the club reached the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League.
Albert Riera was successful as a player and as a coach
The former professional started his coaching career successfully at Olimpija Ljubljana in 2023, where he won the national double of championship and cup victory. Riera then gained international experience at the traditional French club Girondins de Bordeaux before moving to Celje and continuing his impressive track record there.
As a player, Riera had an illustrious career with stints in six different countries. In 430 competitive games he impressed, among others, at Liverpool FC and Manchester City in the Premier League. He won a total of six titles with RCD Mallorca, Galatasaray SK and Olympiacos FC and played 16 international matches for Spain.
Riera is bringing two proven assistant coaches with her to Frankfurt. Pablo Remon Arteta (UEFA Pro license) and Lorenzo Dolcetti (UEFA A diploma) have already worked successfully with him at NK Celje. Arteta holds the UEFA Pro license while Dolcetti has the UEFA A diploma. Jan Fießer and goalkeeping coach Jan Zimmermann will remain part of the Frankfurt coaching team.
Sports director Markus Krösche was enthusiastic about the commitment: “Albert impressed us in the discussions with his professional depth and his good communication.” Riera stands for “modern, intensive and offensive football” and is a perfect fit for Eintracht both in terms of sport and personality. His farewell game with Celje against NK Maribor is scheduled for Sunday. (tb)
