Ajax and Rosario Central have reached an agreement about the rental period of Gastón Ávila. The left back will return to Argentina immediately and will stay there until the end of this calendar year. The rental deal includes an option to purchase, Ajax emphasizes on its website.
Ávila was acquired from Royal Antwerp FC in mid-2023. At the time, Ajax paid a minimum amount of 12.5 million euros for the Argentinian defender, who signed a contract in Amsterdam until the summer of 2028.
The wing defender never managed to break through at Ajax and was loaned out to Brazilian side Fortaleza last year. He leaves the Amsterdam club with only eight appearances to his name.
”Due to injuries, Gaston was only able to play eight official matches in Ajax’s first team. Partly because of this, he unfortunately was not able to show himself structurally,” explains director of football affairs Marijn Beuker on the Ajax website.
”At the moment there is no prospect of playing time for him with us, which makes a new rental the best solution for all parties. We wished Gaston good luck at his old club in Argentina,” added the technical director of the Amsterdam team.
For a moment, Ávila seemed to be on his way to São Paulo, but the former player of Royal Antwerp, among others, pulled the plug on the deal because he wanted to return to his native Argentina.
In June last year, Ávila spoke to the Argentinian medium Radio 2 already indicated that he would love to return to Rosario Central, the club where it all started for him.
