Women’s Football 2025: Marta & Aitana’s Impact

By Elizabeth Pérez, CNN en Español

It was not just another 2025 for women’s football. Just to begin to retrace the path traveled, at the national team level this year had the farewell of, for many, the best player in history, the Brazilian Marta, who said goodbye to the Canarinha in a big way, while the generational replacement already has a name and surname: Aitana Bonmatí.

The striker, winner of the Ballon d’Or six times, scored two goals in the final match that Brazil beat Colombia, thus lifting the title for the fourth time in her career and being chosen as the best player of the competition.

Colombia had done more than merit to be the fair winner of the Copa América for the first time in its history, but Marta’s hierarchy and last breath of talent earned one more title for Brazil, the most winning team in this tournament, with nine titles.

In Europe, England defended the Euro title they won in 2022 after beating Spain on penalties.

Sarina Wiegman, who was also European champion in 2017 with the Netherlands before winning two consecutive crowns with England, became the second coach to win three consecutive Women’s Euro titles, an achievement that earned her the Ballon d’Or as coach of the year.

The definition consisted of two almost identical matches, with teams that seemed to please the fans’ favoritism, but that from the penalty point reached a different outcome.

Women’s football continues to grow by leaps and bounds and Aitana Bonmatí is one of its main ambassadors. The Spanish midfielder for FC Barcelona won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA’s The Best award for the best player in the world for the third consecutive year, consolidating her dominance in the elite.

Bonmatí was the great leader of Barça and the Spanish team in 2025. Although the Catalan team lost the Champions League final against Arsenal and La Roja lost to England in the Euro Cup, Aitana dazzled with her class, dribbling and vision of the game throughout the season. Her talent has been key for women’s football to gain more and more admirers and followers around the world.
