CAIRO (Egypt) – The curtain fell on the 2025 edition of the WBLA on Sunday, with hosts Al Ahly Sporting Club winning their first-ever African title.
The Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Hall in Cairo, with a capacity of 3,000 seats and host of the tournament, was sold out for the occasion.
Al Ahly Sporting Club thus becomes the second Egyptian club to win the competition, after the success of Alexandria Sporting in 2022 and 2023.
Cairenes were the only undefeated team in the tournament, finishing with a perfect record of six wins and no losses (6-0). They are followed by Ferroviário de Maputo, three-time African champion, who leaves with a record of five victories and one defeat (5–1).
In the third place match, played two hours before the grand final, the Rwandan Patriotic Army (APR) took over ASC Ville de Dakar (Senegal) 90–84 after overtime, winning the bronze medal for the second consecutive year.
Already last year, APR beat the host team, ASC Ville de Dakar, in the match for third place, in a packed Marius N’Diaye Gymnasium in Dakar.
In the match for fifth place, the Angolans from Sporting Club de Luanda, who were participating in their first WBLA, won 74–67 against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
Earlier in the day, Rwandan club REG emerged victorious in the seventh place match by defeating CNSS of the Democratic Republic of Congo 77–72.
Al Ahly Sporting Club’s Raneem Elgedawy was voted WBLA 2025 MVP.
She is also in the typical team for the WBLA 2025 tournament, alongside Aliyah Matharu (ASC Ville de Dakar), Yacine Diop (APR), Ingvild Mucauro (Ferroviário de Maputo) and Hagar Amer (Al Ahly Sporting Club).
