The Franco-Algerian journalist thinks that Senegal will not complete CAN 2025 in Morocco (December 21, 2025 to January 19, 2026). Even if he agrees that the Lions of Teranga have the best team on paper, Walid Acherchour thinks that it will ultimately be Mohamed Salah’s Egypt which will be crowned.
“Senegal winner of the CAN? No. Just like Morocco. I was torn in my choice, but I’m going for Egypt. That’s my feeling. Because this Egyptian team is very hard to come out of a competition. In recent years, it has only been beaten on penalties. The Egyptian championship remains very, very strong, especially in African competitions. Then Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, who made it through the first 6 months of the season under anonymity, will come to Morocco with sharp teeth,” predicted Walid Acherchour on the Winamax FC show.
Worse, according to the journalist-columnist, Pape Thiaw’s men will not make it past the quarter-finals. “In my predictions, I see a quarter between Senegal and Tunisia. With their defensive solidity, the Tunisians will take out the Senegalese,” he says.
During this broadcast exclusively dedicated to predictions for CAN 2025, Acherchour bet on a final victory for a selection from the North of the continent. “I am convinced that this CAN will be won by a country from North Africa. I do not see Morocco because of the pressure, not Algeria which is still behind, not Tunisia which has offensive problems. But, I see Egypt,” he adds.
Regarding Senegal, the journalist has some reservations. “The Senegal list is scary, but you don’t win a CAN with a list. There are two questions that I ask myself. The first is about Pape Thiaw. How he will manage his (first) CAN. He has managed the situation well since his appointment, but he arrived as an interim. The second question concerns the management of Sadio Mané. As for Mahrez with Algeria, we will have to see how he will manage Mané and the statuses in this team because there is plethora of solutions, particularly on the offensive level,” he analyzes.
Note that on the Winamax FC board, the 3 other consultants, namely Tidiany M’bo, Elton Mokolo and Najim Medini, all chose Senegal as the future winner in their predictions.
