A top international club is involved in Wahi poker. The Spanish club apparently offers a high purchase option. Eintracht Frankfurt could still earn millions in transfers.
Frankfurt – The transfer saga surrounding Elye Wahi is taking a surprising turn. While Eintracht Frankfurt recently negotiated a loan for the 22-year-old striker with OGC Nice, Sevilla FC is now suddenly involved in the poker for the French attacker. According to the French sports newspaper The Team The Spaniards have made a concrete offer to the people of Frankfurt that has made the SGE sit up and take notice.
The crucial difference to the Nice deal: Sevilla offers a loan with an option to buy, while the French only wanted a pure loan without any further commitment. The amount of the purchase option is not known, but it is classified as “high” internally at Eintracht Transfer market reported. For the SGE, this could mean the chance to get back a large part of the 26 million euro transfer fee that it paid to Olympique Marseille for Wahi in January.
Sevilla offer to Eintracht Frankfurt could decide Wahi transfer
The development comes at a good time for Frankfurt. Wahi is considered a transfer flop after his difficult first year in the Bundesliga. The Frenchman remained goalless in 18 league games, only scoring in the DFB Cup. Its current market value has fallen to around twelve million euros. A high purchase option from Sevilla could help Eintracht limit the financial damage while offering Wahi a new perspective.
While Nice lures with coach Franck Haise, under whom Wahi experienced his best times at RC Lens, Sevilla scores with the prospect of a permanent solution. The Andalusian club is fighting to reach the European places this season and urgently needs reinforcements in attack. For Wahi it would be the chance for a fresh start in one of the big European leagues after his Bundesliga experience was disappointing.
Eintracht now faces an important decision. Sports director Markus Krösche, who gives honest insights into Eintracht’s misunderstanding Wahi, says he prefers quick solutions and will examine the Sevilla offer closely. A move to Spain could be the best option for everyone involved. In parallel to the exit negotiations, the SGE is already working on reinforcements for the offensive.
According to media reports, Frankfurt is already in talks with George Ilenikhena from AS Monaco about a possible transfer of the 19-year-old Nigerian. Younes Ebnoutalib from SV Elversberg and William Osula from Newcastle United are also on Frankfurt’s list. The Wahi saga is an example of the challenges in the modern transfer business.
What was intended to be an investment worth millions is threatening to turn into a costly misunderstanding. But with the Sevilla offer, a solution is now emerging that could help both sides. For Wahi it would be the chance for a fresh start, for Eintracht it would be the opportunity to get off lightly financially. The coming days will show whether Frankfurt decides on the Spanish offer or chooses the route to Nice. (ck)
