FC Bayern is about to sign Virgilio Olaya. Before moving to Munich, the 17-year-old should first gain match practice in Europe.
As transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports, Grasshopper Club Zurich is one of the possible locations for the Ecuadorian central defender to be loaned out. Bayern are currently examining several options to enable the highly talented right-footed player to play minutes at a high level after the contract is signed. Other clubs within Europe are also under discussion.
On Monday, Romano had already announced that an oral agreement had been reached between FC Bayern, SD Aucas and Olaya. The defensive player’s contract will run from his 18th birthday in February 2026 and will run until 2030. The deal has not yet been officially confirmed, but internal preparations have long been in full swing. Olaya is considered a physically robust central defender with a good overview of the game, but is said to still have potential for development in terms of play structure.
Hoeneß with criticism of existing rules
Since Olaya is currently neither eligible to play in the regional league nor in the youth sector, alternative options are required. The Grasshopper Club Zurich, which already has two Bayern loan players, Lovro Zvonarek and Jonathan Asp Jensen, is considered the obvious solution. A loan deal with another club from the Red & Gold network around Los Angeles FC is also possible. The aim is to challenge Olaya at a high competitive level without throwing him straight into the professional squad.
Uli Hoeneß recently expressed clear criticism of the current rules: “A really big problem is that we can’t let an 18-year-old South American play in our second team because the laws don’t allow it. That’s ridiculous.”
It is still unclear where exactly Olaya will take his first steps in Europe. But the transfer is getting closer and closer and with it a clear development plan for the aspiring talent.
