Max Verstappen secures decisive pole position in Abu Dhabi
In the final, 24th stage of the Formula 1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi, Red Bull pilot Max Verstappen won the qualification. He will start Sunday’s decisive fight for the championship title from the first starting position, providing himself with an optimal opportunity to fight for victory and hope for the championship title. This qualifying victory is particularly important given the fact that over the past 10 years at the Abu Dhabi circuit, every race has been won by drivers who started from the front row, and in 10 out of 10 cases the winners have come directly from the first position. This gives Verstappen a significant psychological and strategic advantage.
An intense battle between title contenders
Verstappen showed an impressive result on the track – 1 minute and 22.207 seconds, beating his fiercest contenders for the title, “McLaren” drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Norris was 0.201 seconds behind in second, while Piastri was third, losing 0.230 seconds. This order of results means that all three main title contenders will share the first three starting spots, creating an exciting and unpredictable scenario for the upcoming race. This is the first title to be decided at the final stage of the season since 2021, when Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton in a fierce battle that was also his first world title.
Title scenarios and the Norris advantage
Overall leader Lando Norris heads into the decisive round in Abu Dhabi with a 12-point lead over Verstappen and a 16-point lead over Piastre. To become the champion, Norris needs to finish on the podium, regardless of the results of Verstappen and Piastri. However, even though he has the advantage, it has not been an easy season as he had to deal with a suspension in Las Vegas and a strategic error in Qatar that prevented him from securing the title early on. Verstappen, who has shown an incredible performance this season, trailing by as much as 104 points after the 15th stage, is ready to fight to the end. He will need a win and additional points from other drivers to claim his fifth straight title.
Other important qualification information
George Russell from “Mercedes” took fourth place behind the title contenders, while “Ferrari” driver Charles Leclair will start fifth. Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin was able to secure sixth position, while Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto took seventh. Esteban Ocon (“Haas”), Izak Hajjar (“Racing Bulls”) and Yuki Tsunoda (“Red Bull”) also entered the TOP 10. Tsunoda, who is in his final stint with Red Bull, took to the track mainly to give his team-mate Verstappen an aerodynamic boost, helping him improve his lap times. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton suffered another setback in qualifying, failing to qualify for Q3 for the third time in a row, and will start from 16th. His performance this season has been a big disappointment for both him and the team.
