Wout van Aert recorded two great victories on the road in 2025. Yet not everyone is happy with the year Van Aert rode this year.
With stage victories in the Giro and the Tour, Wout van Aert only managed to win twice in 2025. He also collected many places of honor, including a fourth place in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.
Few victories for Van Aert in 2025
Yet Van Aert’s number of victories is striking, because there are a lot fewer than a few years ago. In 2021, Van Aert won thirteen times, including Gent-Wevelgem, the Amstel Gold Race and three stages in the Tour.
In 2022, Van Aert’s number of victories dropped to nine, in 2023 and 2024 Van Aert managed to win five times each time. It has been since 2018, when Van Aert was still a full-time motocross rider, that he won so little in one season.
Should Van Aert win more for his salary?
Columnist Hans Vandeweghe is therefore keen on Van Aert. “Van Aert there’s just nothing to dobut winning a little more would come in handy. If only to justify his popularity and salary,” he says The Morning.

With 51 professional victories, Van Aert is no longer the number one in Belgium ahead of Vandeweghe. Merlier has won 66 times among the pros, Evenepoel 67 times. And while Evenepoel still has to turn 26 in January.
