A Charlton Athletic fan has died and the match has been called off after being treated at the stadium, the football club has announced.
The team’s EFL Championship game against Portsmouth at The Valley Stadium was abandoned in the 12th minute while the fan received initial medical attention. The game was then postponed. The result was 0:0, reports news.sky.com.
Charlton Athletic said in a statement they were “devastated” and thanked the staff and emergency services who did their best during the incident.
“The club is grateful to the supporters in attendance, as well as the Portsmouth players and staff, for their patience and understanding during this tragedy.
“All staff at the club extend their deepest sympathies to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Charlton Athletic captain Greg Docherty paid tribute to the fan on Channel X: “Absolutely devastating news… from all the players at the club, our thoughts are with his family and friends at this extremely difficult time,” followed by a broken heart emoji.
Both clubs said details of when the match would be rescheduled would be announced in due course.
Portsmouth also paid tribute on their website, saying they were also “devastated”.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their family and friends at this difficult time,” Portsmouth said on its website.
The EFL posted on X: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the supporter’s family, friends and everyone at @CAFCofficial at this incredibly difficult time,” followed by a love heart emoji.
