Tunisia started the African Cup of Nations with a convincing victory over Uganda in Rabat: 3-1. The ‘Eagles of Carthage’ are currently leading in group C.

Tunisia will be the opponent of the Dutch national team in Kansas City on Thursday, June 25. The North African country won the African Cup of Nations in 1962, 1968 and 1976.

Two goals Achouri

In the pouring rain in the Moroccan capital, the Tunisians overwhelmed Uganda from the start, with the creative brain Hannibal Mejbri playing a leading role. From a corner kick by the Burnley player, Ellyes Skhiri gave Tunisia an early lead via the inside of the post.

Five minutes before half time, Tunisia made it 2-0. Ali Abdi crossed from the left and Elias Achouri neatly volleyed the ball into the goal with the inside of his foot. FC Copenhagen winger Achouri also scored the third goal after the break.

Uganda had little to say, but Denis Omedi’s honorary goal followed in injury time.

Nigeria struggles past Tanzania

Earlier on Tuesday, Nigeria recorded a difficult victory over Tanzania in the same group C: 2-1. In Fez, Semi Ajayi opened the scoring for Nigeria.

Charles M’Mombwa surprisingly equalized just after half-time, but Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman became the match winner in the 52nd minute. A goal by Nigerian star player Victor Osimhen was disallowed for offside.
