In the women’s bronze medal match of the SEA Games 5-a-side basketball tournament in Thailand today, the Malaysian women’s basketball team finally lost 55-62 to Indonesia, the last SEA Games champion and the previous top four loser.

This is the second time in team history that the Malaysian women’s basketball team failed to make it to the top three in the SEA Games 5-a-side basketball tournament and failed to win any medals, following the 2019 Philippines Games.

Malaysia’s game “stuck” after the start, and faced a double-digit deficit (5-12) early on. Fortunately, at the end of the first quarter, Zhang Huiling led the team to score 7 points in a row, helping Malaysia catch up with Indonesia 12-15.

However, Malaysia fell into another slump on the offensive end in the second quarter, scoring only 8 points in a single quarter, and trailed Indonesia 20-35 at the end of the first half.

After the side change, Malaysia caught up to a single-digit point difference (39 to 48) in the third quarter. Unfortunately, it was unable to turn the tide and eventually lost 55 to 62.

Malaysia’s leading scorer, Yap Foy Yee, scored 16 points and 4 rebounds, while Zhang Huiling also contributed 16 points and Teo Ying Ying had 9 points and 6 rebounds.

Later in the women’s final, the host country Thailand battled the Philippines for the gold.
