The Thai men’s badminton team will face Myanmar in the first round of the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, while their women’s counterparts are guaranteed at least a bronze medal after receiving a bye in yesterday’s draw.

The men’s team, led by world No.3 and former world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn, could face the winners of the tie between Malaysia and the Philippines in the semi-finals.

Defending champions Indonesia received a first-round bye and will play either Singapore or Laos in the semi-finals.

Thailand have won the men’s team crown three times, most recently at the 2021 Hanoi Games. They claimed bronze in Phnom Penh two years ago.

Meanwhile, the women’s team — chasing their seventh consecutive SEA Games title — will face either Singapore or the Philippines in the semi-finals.

They defeated Indonesia 3-0 to win gold at the 2023 tournament in Cambodia.

The badminton team competition begins on Sunday and runs until Dec 10 at Gymnasium 4, Thammasat University, Rangsit.

The women’s team competition starts at 10am, while the men’s competition begins at 3pm.

The individual competition will take place from Dec 11-14.
