Telephony Lands UEFA Champions League Rights to 2031

The Movistar Plus+ television platform occupies a very important place in the convergent offer miMovistar of Telefónica, which gathers communications and services to sustained customers on the best network in the country, both fixed and mobile.

Faced with the growing interest of global platforms to position itself in the market with live content, Telefónica has ensured its decisive role in premium sports, one of the differentiating elements of its offer in order to attract and retain its customers in Spain.

The European football tournaments, which are currently already part of the operator’s television offer through Movistar Plus+, will continue to strengthen the company’s offer. Telefónica, focused on having a differentiating character in a highly fragmented market environment in Spain, will continue to have the Champions League and the rest of the UEFA tournaments.

The company’s convergent offer allows it to maintain, in this competitive scenario, with great comfort compared to other telecommunications operators, an excellent and differentiated service with great power of loyalty among the public. UEFA competitions, with more than 140 matches per season in the Champions League alone, are one of the distinguishing factors of Movistar Plus+’s premium content offer.

Telefónica’s new agreement, which was transferred to the National Stock Market Commission (CNMV), consists of an award worth 1,464 million euros at a rate of 366 million euros for each of the included seasons.

At the press conference offered during the last presentation of results, led by the president of the company Marc Murtra, questions about sports rights were one of the subjects of interest to journalists. In the question period, Emilio Gayo, CEO of Telefónica, recognized that sports rights are an important part of the strategy and, specifically, football rights for positioning in the high value. However, Gayo has recalled that he would go to the auction with a “financially disciplined” proposal.

In addition, the new award gives Telefónica a wider range of holding UEFA rights, with four seasons compared to the usual three years of which the auction was being made up. Telefónica currently has the rights from the 2024/25 season to the 2026/2027 season, three seasons worth 960 million euros.
