A former employee was sentenced Thursday at the Vesoul criminal court for having produced gift cards that she gave herself. Absent during the hearing, she received a prison sentence.
For several months, a 37-year-old cashier embezzled more than €26,000 in a supermarket located in the Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, thanks to a well-rehearsed ploy. Hired in February and described as “reliable”, she worked overtime without being noticed. In November 2023, the arrival of a new accountant reveals a gap of €13,000. After filing a complaint and conducting his own investigation, the manager discovered the scale of the scam, which brought him to the brink of burnout. On the stand Thursday in court where the case is public, he explains a larger sum of unpaid debts by providing a whole basket of elements and evidence. The procedure was as simple as it was effective: the cashier simulated item returns to generate credits, which she placed on cards in her name and used for her personal purchases. In total, 188 cards were used for €26,470 in misappropriations. Me Catherine Bertholde, for the civil parties, underlined the impact of this deception on the manager and the employees. At the end of the deliberations, the court sentenced the defendant to six months in prison, with restitution of €26,470 and €1,000 for moral damage.
