The Goierrita town of Segura was the scene this Sunday of the Euskadi Cyclocross Championship, an event that put the final touch on … the season and which has brought together hundreds of fans and participants in the fields of the municipality. The atmosphere has been unbeatable throughout the morning, with a notable influx of people who have enjoyed the spectacle of this winter discipline. The route, designed and insured by the local club, has been key to the development of the event and the participants themselves have defined it as “fun but hard.”
As a curiosity, the day started half an hour late than the initially planned schedule. The lack of sufficient clarity in the early hours has forced the start of the first test, scheduled for 9:00, to be delayed, so all the races have finally started at 9:30, without this having dampened the development of the championship.
In the master 40 category, the winner and new champion of Euskadi was Iñaki Carro, from the SCBikers Club Ciclista. In the 50/60 master’s degree, the title was awarded to Manu Quintanilla, from Ciclos Yurrebaso, winning with authority in his category.
Irati Arangur.
In the male cadet category, the absolute victory of the race went to Aitor Beloqui, from Saltoki-Olza-Sagardoy, while the first Basque cyclist to cross the finish line and, therefore, champion of Euskadi, was Telmo Hernández, from Durangaldeko Bostakbat. In the female cadet event, June del Teso, from JRG Norclamp Otxe, has won both the victory and the regional title.
Among the juniors, Aner Irizar, from Alimco-Campagnolo, has won the men’s category with authority, dominating the event from the beginning, while in the women’s category the champion has been Mirari Gotxi, from Bertako Igogailuak-Spiuk. In the Open women’s category, the victory went to Irati Aranguren, from the Andoaingo Txirrindulari Eskola, and in the men’s master 30 the victory went to Markel Uriarte, from the Orbea Sport Club.
The last test of the morning, corresponding to the Open and sub23 categories, brought an exciting outcome. The Cantabrian Ismael Esteban, from Logos Energia BH, has claimed victory in the race, but the title of absolute Euskadi champion has gone to Aitor Hernández, from Ermuko TE, who has finished in second position and has thus achieved his sixth regional championship. The title of Euskadi U23 champion went to Unax Galán, from Euskoime-BH-Miribilla, who finished third. The race was very close in the first laps, but from the halfway point Esteban launched an attack that allowed him to lead his pursuers by about a minute, a difference that he managed to maintain until the end.
Before the start of the competition, the organization and attendees have observed a minute of silence in tribute to the Zornotzarra chef Juan Larruzea, who recently passed away. Larruzea was a figure closely linked to the world of cycling, recognized for his work as a cook for the Spanish Cycling Federation, for his work with renowned teams such as Banesto and for his constant collaboration in the promotion of this sport.
