While people worldwide may still be recovering from Christmas and are looking forward to New Year’s Eve with or without anticipation, the F1 world invariably focuses on today’s date: December 29.
In 2013, twelve years ago today, the world of Formula 1 stopped turning for a while because of the news that came out from Michael Schumacher. He suffered serious brain damage during a skiing accident in Méribel, France.
Schumacher was operated on several times and kept in an artificial coma, from which he woke up after about six months. Since then, Michael Schumacher’s condition has largely been guesswork.
The family chooses to keep that piece of information completely out of the spotlight, a choice that should be respected. “We protect him now, as he has always protected us,” his wife Corinna said lovingly in the Netflix documentary Schumacher.
The last piece of concrete information also comes from that documentary, in which son Mick indicated that he was willing to give up everything to be able to exchange ideas with his father, something that would not be possible.
There was no concrete update in 2025, but the family name did come into the news because of the lawsuit in which they were and still are involved. The family was extorted, demanding 15 million euros. If this was not met, photos of Schumacher would be leaked.
Early in the year, three men were found guilty, with the Schumacher family appealing the verdict against a former security worker.
“We have appealed against what we consider to be far too lenient a sentence for Mr F. In my opinion, he was the mastermind behind this. What shocks me most is the enormous breach of trust. He should receive a sentence that deters potential copycats,” said Corinna Schumacher.
An extremely sad case, with a sad reason anyway. Fortunately, the family’s wishes are respected by many people. Outside of the spotlight, he is still constantly on the minds of many fans worldwide.
Today we also reflect on Michael Schumacher. We can only continue to wish him and his loved ones strength, in other words #KeepFightingMichael.
