Schick Injury & Andrich on Thiaw’s Red Card – Newcastle Match

Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick (29) missed Wednesday’s Champions League match against Newcastle due to a sprained ankle. According to Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes, it is not clear whether the Czech international will be able to play in Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Kolín nad Rýnem.

Schick suffered an injury in the 21st minute after a foul by Malick Thiaw, who stopped him illegally on the edge of the penalty area. After treatment, he returned to the game, but did not start again in the second half.

Dutch referee Serdar Gözübüyük initially awarded a penalty for Thiaw’s tackle, but after consulting the video, changed the decision to a free kick, saying the foul had taken place before the penalty area.

The German defender of Newcastle pulled Schick to the ground with his hand and also kicked him in the ankle. “It doesn’t look good. We had to replace him at half-time, he had a big gash on his ankle. He took a good beating.” assistant coach Rogier Meijer, who replaced head coach Kasper Hjulmand, who was absent for personal reasons, told DPA.

Schick limped after the game. “He got really loaded. He had to have his leg up. I don’t know yet how he will be on Saturday. We’ll see tomorrow,” said Rolfes.

The appeal of the penalty deprived Leverkusen of a good opportunity to make it 2-0. According to captain Robert Andrich, the referee should have either sent Thiaw off or ordered a penalty. “When I see Patrick’s Achilles tendon, it’s bright red to me for that reason alone.” stated the German representative.

Newcastle managed to turn the score around in the second half. In the 88th minute, Alejandro Grimaldo gave Leverkusen at least a point, which tied the game at 2:2.
