Santadi Calcio Withdraws: First Category Exit

Always enormous problems but, above all, no prospect of improving the current situation: Santadi Calcio throws in the towel and withdraws, abandoning the First Category championship, group B just before the eleventh matchday. «We will not take the field on Sunday against Masainas», says Antonio Trogu, coach and so far also factotum of a team that has always suffered very clear defeats and has scored just 4 goals.

«It was a decision that we were already considering», is the analysis of the fresh ex-coach, «but we still had a small hope of being able to strengthen the team and receive news and support on the corporate front. Hopes that have remained just that and so let’s say enough is enough: we need to reset everything and start over again.”

Having landed in the First Category 2 seasons ago, the Sulcian team survived by fighting in the last season but the club then immediately went through major difficulties. Shortly before the start of the championship, the step backwards by president Mattia Sundas had even put Santadi’s participation in doubt, who then managed to play anyway but only thanks to the enormous sacrifices made so far by a group made up of very few people.

«No financial feedback, no possible help from the youth sector, staff reduced to the bare bones and with 7/8 out of form players brought back after years of inactivity: let’s also add the fact that we paid for the away games out of our own pocket and that the equipment was also in short supply, and we gave the best picture of the situation», adds Antonio Trogu, who was also forced to take to the field several times despite his 47 years of age. «However, I want to say a huge thank you – he concludes – to these guys who, despite the enormous difficulties, put their best foot forward and took on a thousand problems solely thanks to their passion and love for the team. A possible return? Football is my passion, if there was a serious and structured project to start again I wouldn’t say no.”
