Samuel Eto’o Secures Re-election Amidst Controversy as Cameroonian Football Federation President
In a move that surprised few but stirred significant debate, legendary Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o has been re-elected as the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) for another four-year term. The vote, held on November 29th at the national technical centre in Mbankomo, saw Eto’o secure a commanding 97.70% of the ballots cast. Out of eighty-seven voters, only two opted against his leadership, highlighting his dominant position within the federation.
However, this landslide victory was not achieved in a vacuum of calm. The election process itself was fraught with tension, with the Cameroonian Ministry of Sports attempting to halt the proceedings in August, citing alleged “irregularities.” When fecafoot failed to provide a satisfactory response,the Minister of Sports,narcisse Mouelle Kombi,escalated the matter,requesting the Minister of Territorial Administration,Paul Atanga Nji,to ban the November 29th general assembly due to concerns over “threats to public order.” Thes efforts, however, proved unsuccessful in derailing eto’o’s re-election bid.
The morning of the election saw a vocal protest outside the Mbankomo center. Club leaders and players gathered, expressing their opposition to Eto’o’s continued leadership and the electoral process. Their signs, bearing slogans like “no to the misappropriation of football money” and “No to a Fecafoot of friends and brothers,” pointed to underlying grievances. The latter slogan, in particular, alluded to the recent appointments of Samuel Eto’o’s brothers, Etienne and david Eto’o, as delegates for the South-West and Littoral Leagues, raising questions about nepotism within the federation.
