Belgian Badminton’s Future is Shining: Janssens and Christophe Ascend the Ranks

October 26, 2023

The Belgian badminton scene is buzzing with the emergence of extraordinary young talent, and two names are making significant waves: 12-year-old Alexandre Janssens and 9-year-old Léopold Christophe. These rising stars are not just participating; they’re competing at the highest levels, showcasing skill, determination, and a hunger for victory that bodes well for the future of the sport in Belgium and beyond.

Janssens Overcomes Rivals, Battles Injury to Claim Silver

Alexandre Janssens, a formidable force in the U13 singles category, proved his mettle by clinching the vice-champion title at the recent Belgian championships. His journey to the final was marked by a significant personal triumph: avenging a previous defeat against Lars van Belle. My goal for these championships was to beat lars Van Belle who had beaten me in the final of the Belgian U11 championship in 2023, Janssens shared, highlighting his strategic focus and competitive spirit.I faced him in the semi-finals, I won 21-18, 21-10. This victory underscored his growth and resilience, demonstrating an ability to learn from past encounters and execute under pressure.

While Janssens ultimately fell to the top seed,Tristan Reiss,in the singles final, his performance was commendable. The scoreline of 0-2 (15-21, 12-21) doesn’t fully capture the narrative. I held on well in the first set but I injured my left hand. As I am left-handed, it was disabling. The second set was therefore more difficult, Janssens explained. This setback, a cruel twist of fate for a left-handed player, undoubtedly impacted his ability to compete at full strength. Despite the injury, his presence in the final and his positive outlook are inspiring. However, I was very happy to be a finalist, he added, showcasing a mature perspective on the outcome.

Janssens’ success didn’t end with singles. He also secured a second-place finish in doubles, impressively partnering with his singles final opponent, Tristan Reiss. This collaboration speaks volumes about the sportsmanship and competitive camaraderie developing among these young athletes. Janssens is clearly on the radar of the Belgian League, training with them every Monday and regularly participating in international competitions. I am going to participate in a tournament in the Netherlands at the end of the year. I have already played tournaments in neighboring countries, in France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, he stated, signaling his ambition to test his skills on a broader stage.

Christophe: A Young Contender Making His Mark

In the U11 category, Léopold Christophe, a first-year competitor, also demonstrated significant promise, reaching the podium twice in doubles. He earned medals alongside partners Thibaut Dubois and Ellie Nols in mixed doubles. At just 9 years old, Christophe’s early success is a testament to his dedication. We were all first years. I’m 9 years old, he noted, emphasizing his status as one of the youngest in his age group.

Christophe, like Janssens, had specific goals for the singles
