At Real Madrid they have lost their way for a while. For the third time in a row, the Royal team did not get further than a draw, each time against modest opponents. On Sunday evening it was Girona (with Axel Witsel) that Courtois and co. points taken off. Barcelona is thus the new leader in La Liga.
Visits to Rayo Vallecano, Elche and Girona. Anyone who looked at Real Madrid’s program at the beginning of November might have thought of a smooth 9 out of 9.
But it wasn’t all that simple. Real recorded barely 2 out of 6 in those first two matches and did not get further than a draw on Sunday evening.
On the stroke of half-time, Ounahi had beautifully made Girona 1-0. Thibaut Courtois was transfixed by the shot from close range.
Sad, because about 5 minutes earlier Real had also scored, but Mbappé’s opening goal was disallowed for handball.
After the break, the Frenchman struck again. The Royal were awarded a penalty after 67 minutes and Mbappé provided renewed hope. Unfortunately for Courtois and co. there was no more winning goal and this time it remained a draw.
Real Madrid has lost its leading position in La Liga to major rival Barcelona, which has a one point lead with 34 points.
