PSV’s Til & Veerman: Can They Carry the Dutch Team?

NOS Football

How special will this season be for Guus Til and Joey Veerman? The PSV duo has played a significant role in the good performance of the Premier League leader so far. What does this do to their chances of selection for the Dutch national team?

PSV coach Bosz hopes that the two will again play an important role in the away match against FC Utrecht on Sunday afternoon (12.15 p.m.).

Til is PSV’s club top scorer (14 goals and 4 assists), while Veerman seems to be on his way to one of his most productive seasons in Eindhoven (8 goals and 7 assists). Not an insignificant footnote: they also show that form in the Champions League.

No international matches

It is of course open to question whether the two PSV players would be selected for the Dutch team at this time, simply because there is no international football until the end of March 2026.

But the thought is stimulating. Particularly because their competitors Luciano Valente and Quinten Timber are going through a significantly poorer period with Feyenoord, while Wout Weghorst is currently injured at Ajax.

Til is currently shooting everything. If the World Cup had been played now, we would have had a very interesting discussion.

Til has increasingly been the subject of discussion at the talk show and podcast tables in recent months due to his good performances.

Shrugging

Many analysts initially shrugged their shoulders about a Dutch return from Til, who played his last international match on October 11, 2024.

“He is a good footballer for the Premier League, but for the Dutch national team? Absolutely not,” Rafael van der Vaart, for example, said in early November Studio Football. But public opinion is shifting due to Til’s good performance.

The six-time international’s figures speak for themselves. Til has scored twelve times in nine of PSV’s last eleven games, including two goals in the Champions League and a hat-trick at AZ. He also scored another goal last Tuesday in the cup match between PSV and GVVV (3-0).

“He was already good, but I think he has now convinced himself. Will he be invited? If you score so many goals…”, former Dutch captain Ruud Gullit suggested last Monday in the football program Rondo from Ziggo.

Hedwiges Maduro also believes that the PSV top scorer should be more prominent for the Dutch team. “If the World Cup had been played now, we would have had a very interesting discussion,” says the football analyst.

The versatility of Til, who can play in both midfield and striker, is an added value, according to Maduro. “That is very pleasant for a coach at a final tournament. If Til maintains his form, I would like to see him work for the Dutch team in March. Koeman of course plays in a different way than Bosz.”

‘I would take a Veerman in shape’

The 27-year-old Volendammer no longer received an invitation from Koeman after his mediocre performance at the European Championships in 2024. Veerman must distinguish himself particularly in the Champions League or in top national matches if he really wants to be in the picture again. “PEC Zwolle-PSV is not a reference for me”, were the now well-known words of Koeman in October.

Maduro still sees room for Veerman in the Dutch team. “If he is also in a good flow next summer, then I would take him, especially with a selection of 26 players,” says the former international. “Frenkie de Jong is our midfielder who can give a through ball, Veerman can do that too. That is his weapon.”

The question is whether Veerman still feels there is a real chance of playing in the Dutch team in the coming months. The midfielder seems close to a transfer to Fenerbahçe this winter, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday.

That possible transfer will not increase Veerman’s chance of selection in the Dutch team, Maduro thinks. “Fenerbahçe is a top club, but the national coach must assess whether the Turkish competition is an indicator. If Veerman really wants to stay in the picture, he would be wise to stay with PSV.”
