PSG FIFA Intercontinental Cup Victory

Paris Saint-Germain completed the most successful year in the club’s history with their sixth title. Coach Luis Enrique’s team also won the FIFA Intercontinental Cup with a 2-1 penalty shootout against Brazil’s champions CR Flamengo. After 120 minutes the score was 1:1 (1:1, 1:0) in Al-Rayyan/Qatar.

Goalkeeper Matwei Safonov, who once again replaced the injured goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, saved four penalties. So the miss by Ousmane Dembélé, who had also been named World Player of the Year 2025 in Qatar a day earlier, didn’t matter.

In regular time, Chwitscha Kwarazchelia (38th) initially put Paris in the lead. However, the team from Rio de Janeiro equalized in front of FIFA President Gianni Infantino with a penalty converted by Jorginho (62nd).

PSG had already won the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup in the 2025 calendar year, as well as the championship, the cup and the Supercup in France. At the Club World Cup in the USA, however, it was “only” enough to reach the final.

Since last year, only the champions of the six confederations have taken part in the Intercontinental Cup. PSG was seeded for the final as European Champions League winners. Copa Libertadores winners Flamengo had also prevailed in Qatar in recent days against Cruz Azul from Mexico (2:1) and African champion Pyramids FC from Cairo (2:0).

The competition was played for the first time last year and Real Madrid won. Seven teams took part in the Club World Cup until 2023, with the last winner under the old format being Manchester City. This summer, Chelsea FC won the premiere of the new World Cup for club teams, which was expanded to 32 clubs.
