Third division E-Meerburg suffered another bitter defeat on Saturday against a title candidate. Just like last week, the team frequently played in the opponent’s half, had more ball possession and created some decent opportunities, especially in the first half. Yet after ninety minutes they were left empty-handed again. Olympia only needed two razor-sharp counterattacks to decide the match and thus came out on top. The people of Gouda can quietly watch how fellow leader EMM’21 plays the derby against ROAC on Sunday.
Meerburg has been known for its compact game for some time now: few goals for, but also few against. Goalkeeper Jesse Haak played a major role in this, together with his defense. Haak will leave for Manila on January 1, where he will work for the Dutch embassy. It is not yet clear for exactly how long, but Meerburg will have to miss him for at least the entire year of 2026. His last game of this season did not have a suitable ending. “We actually play football very well, but Olympia needs fewer chances than we do,” Haak said afterwards. “Taking chances is also a quality. Their striker Lion van de Velde comes in front of the goal twice and makes two.”
There was a striking moment when former Noordwijk player Thomas Reynaers urged his team to skip midfield. After Meerburg disrupted Olympia’s build-up several times, he suggested looking for the fast wingers. It immediately proved effective: Van de Velde was again brought into position, who coolly scored the 0-2. Earlier in the match he had already made it 0-1, against the odds.
Meerburg made a neat impression on the ball. With players such as Luc Schade, Tom Klumperman, Sven van Overloop, Lars Barthen and Diego Artist, the team regularly came around the visitors’ penalty area. There were moments, half-chances and threatening situations, but really great opportunities were few and far between. Despite the field dominance, Olympia rarely had to fear a goal.
While Meerburg has been strong defensively in recent seasons, this time it was more vulnerable. Olympia patiently watched for mistakes and moments and took advantage of them with deadly precision. That ultimately turned out to be the difference.
Despite his departure and the defeat, Haak looks back on his period at Meerburg with pleasure. “My friends play football here and I always have a great time. We have enough quality to compete at the top. If we become a little smarter in recognizing situations and capitalizing on our opportunities, things will certainly work out.”
Meerburg drops to the middle table due to the defeat and immediately awaits a strong restart after the winter break: first away against Groeneweg and then at home against FC Oegstgeest. Olympia remains undefeated and seems to be in the battle for the title until the end.
