Nuno Moreira: Vasco’s World Cup Loss to Corinthians

Vasco da Gama and Corinthians met in the game that ended the season in Brazilian football, the second leg of the World Cup final. In an exciting duel, it was the São Paulo team that smiled at the end, prevailing 2-1, after a 0-0 in the first leg.

Corinthians were the first to celebrate, with Yuri Alberto, assisted by Matheuzinho, scoring the goal (18′). Vasco responded in the first half with a Portuguese accent… from Portugal. Gomez worked on the left, looked at the area and saw Nuno Moreira move to the far post. The Portuguese went up there and headed the ball into the back of the net, making history. With this goal, the winger trained at Sporting became the first non-South American player to score in the Copa do Brasil final. It was the 11th goal of the season, crowning what was the best season of the Vasco player’s career.

But, unfortunately for Nuno Moreira’s sins, the second non-South American player to score in a Cup final appeared soon after. In a delicious collective move, started in the defensive midfield, Corinthians designed the play until Yuri Alberto served Memphis Depay, who only had to pull over to put the São Paulo team back in front (63′).

Until the end, Vasco never gave up looking for the equalizing goal… which never ended up arriving. The Rio de Janeiro team missed the opportunity to lift the second World Cup in its history and it was Corinthians who won the trophy for the fourth time, 16 years after the last triumph.
