North Holland Province Continues Commitment to Diverse Sports Funding in 2026
Building on the success of its initiatives in 2024 and 2025, the province of North Holland is set to allocate another €100,000 in sponsorship funds for 2026. This funding aims to support a wide array of sporting events hosted within the province, emphasizing inclusivity for both major professional competitions and smaller, niche tournaments.
Over the past two years, the province has backed fifty distinct sporting events, spanning disciplines such as wheelchair tennis, badminton, water polo, mountain biking, inline skating, cycling, and gymnastics. The program’s core objective is to bridge the gap between elite and recreational sports. As Deputy Jeroen Olthof stated,We see that top sporting events are frequently enough a source of inspiration for young people and associations. By supporting a greater variety of sports and events, we want to bring more people into contact with and inspire enthusiasm for the most diverse sports.
This approach recognizes that the excitement generated by professional athletes can have a ripple effect, encouraging broader participation at all levels.
Broad Reach Across Regions and Disciplines
The province intends to distribute the €100,000 sponsorship budget strategically. The goal is to ensure that funding is spread across various types of sporting events, reaching different geographical areas within North Holland and occurring throughout the year. This ensures that less prominent sports have a genuine opportunity to increase their visibility and connect with new audiences, much like a Cinderella story in the NCAA March Madness bracket can shine a national spotlight on a smaller university.
How to Apply
While the province actively seeks out events that align with its sponsorship criteria, event organizers are also encouraged to proactively reach out if they believe their event qualifies. Detailed information regarding the specific conditions for sponsorship is available on the province’s dedicated sponsorship page, accessible via the Festivals & Events portal. This proactive outreach mirrors how a promising young athlete might reach out to college recruiters, showcasing their potential for success.
This continued investment by North Holland highlights a growing trend among regional governments to leverage sports events as catalysts for community engagement and economic development. The focus on diversity in both sport and geography suggests a sophisticated understanding of how to maximize the impact of public funding, ensuring that the benefits of sports are felt far and wide.
