Newells Target: Uruguay Defender in Top European League

The transfer market in Argentine soccer begins to move. And in that framework, the Rosario teams are not left out of the name dance. Newell’s needs to strengthen itself and to do so it must go out and play in a field where it has not done well in recent years.

The Park team will start the 2026 season with a heavy backpack: the average for relegation. Newell’s is not doing well in that area and will have to score many points to avoid taking risks, regardless of the fact that its fans aspire for the team to fight for great things again.

The first step was taken a few days ago, when the new managers emerging from the December 14 elections designated the duo made up of Favio Orsi and Sergio Gómez as the new coaches of the first division team.

Newell’s, fishing for reinforcements

Now a joint task begins, which will consist of resolving who is still and who is not (some decisions have already been made) in the club, and also which are the players who could reinforce the red and black team.

It is already known that Newell’s is negotiating to bring central midfielder Gonzalo Ábrego, from Godoy Cruz, on loan. And now another name has emerged, in this case of a Uruguayan footballer who is in Europe and who had a time at Estudiantes.

This is Agustín Rogel, a defender who plays for Hertha Berlin. This Tuesday it was learned that they offered it to Newell’s and also to Boca. In the Park it is said that Orsi-Gómez likes him, which is why it should not be ruled out that negotiations begin.

Rogel is a central defender and emerged in Nacional, but he also played in football in Russia and France, went through Estudiantes and since the 2022/23 season he has been at Hertha Berlin. In between, he had a brief stint at Internacional de Porto Alegre.

A year in which he played very little

However, so far this year Rogel has not had much participation in the German capital team. He participated in only one game, was a substitute eight times and never entered. The last time he played a full game was in May.

The player would not mind playing in Argentina. That is why there were movements to offer it in clubs in the Professional League. If a negotiation were opened, the discussion would probably focus on the cost of the transfer, taking into account that it is in European football. But the approval of the technical duo led by Newell’s seems an interesting step for the red and black world.
