From 2009 to 2011, Magath trained the keeper at FC Schalke 04 before moving to Munich. “He has extraordinary physical abilities. He is the only keeper I have had in my coaching career who ran ahead of the field players and not behind them,” the 72-year-old recalled of endurance runs from days gone by.
Magath praises FC Bayern because of Neuer
The former Munich coach also congratulated the bosses on the distribution of playing time in the goalkeeper position.
“FC Bayern did the right thing by adding a second, younger goalkeeper alongside Manuel Neuer. Jonas Urbig is developing further together with Manuel Neuer. I think this attempt is very good. We’ll see whether it will be successful,” said Magath.
The former Hamburger also believes in an extension for the veteran: “Whether Manuel Neuer sticks around for another year, only he can decide. Manuel Neuer, like everyone else, will make mistakes sometimes.”
SPORT1-Expert Stefan Effenberg expects a positive decision from the keeper soon.
“I believe that Manuel Neuer will stick around for another year. I also believe that he will hand over more games to Urbig, that he will not only have the competition four or five times a year, but maybe ten or 15 times,” said Effenberg. “This time will show whether he has the quality to be in goal in Munich in the future.”
