Weakened by pancreatitis, Alex Mumbru worried on several occasions after this summer’s Euro. Now fully recovered from his illness, the conductor of the Mannschaft returned to this complicated episode in the columns of the media Eurohoops.
“It was just a big scare. Everyone knows it was a tough time, but now it’s over, it’s over. I still have to gain a little weight back, because I lost a few kilos, but I’m already exercising 100% in my free time, and I’m monitoring it all very closely.”
Winner of the Euro as a player with Spain (2009), then as a coach this summer with Germany, Mumbru has, without any possible dispute, a voice listened to in the four corners of the Old Continent. Reason why he was also questioned about the imminent arrival of the NBA in Europe.
“If it arrives by breaking the existing ecosystem, that’s not good. If it arrives hand in hand with everyone, that’s better. Anything that adds to high-level basketball, like what the NBA can bring, it’s always positive. I hope that an agreement will be found so that basketball, as a sport, is not impacted. That the best players are on the best teams so that the fans enjoy it. The NBA is a show, here in Europe we see this aspect less and we focus more on basketball, but we have to look at the points of view of the NBA and the Europeans. If they arrive by including themselves in the ecosystem and the schedules are respected, that will be a good thing.
