In a recent speech, NBA commissioner Adam Silver provided some indications on the NBA Europe project, anticipating that in January 2026 there will be “more serious conversations” with potential investors and those interested in the expansion of the league on the European continent.
The context of the NBA expansion in Europe
During the NBA Cup Final between San Antonio and New York, Silver reiterated the importance of exploring new growth opportunities for the league, particularly in Europe. Although no specific details were provided, the commissioner stressed that the interest in the project is “off the charts”, coming not only from football clubs, but also from organizations already active in European basketball.
The next steps for NBA Europe
Silver said: “We are casting a very wide net and are inviting anyone who is interested to come and talk to us, explaining why they want to invest and what resources they would be willing to put forward to start a team.” This approach aims to collect useful information to plan the future of the NBA in Europe.
Growing interest from clubs and organizations
The commissioner noted that interest comes from several sources, including football clubs with or without basketball teams and organizations already involved in the EuroLeague. “We are talking to other organizations or individuals who don’t own any teams, but would be interested if there was an expansion into Europe,” Silver added.
With NBA regular season games scheduled to take place in London and Berlin next month, it is expected that further significant announcements regarding the NBA Europe project could emerge, making January a crucial month for the league’s future on the continent.
