NBA Coach Firing: Title Contender Drama?

Contract until 2029? Most successful coach in franchise history and reigning NBA Coach of the Year? Apparently it doesn’t matter, because Kenny Atkinson could apparently be on the verge of leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That would be awesome: As NBA insider Marc Stein reports, head coach Kenny Atkinson’s chair at the Cleveland Cavaliers is shaking. Club owner Dan Gilbert is said to be “very unhappy” with his team’s start to the season and is considering a change given 15 wins and 14 defeats after 29 games.

A dismissal of Atkinson would be a sensation despite the Cavs’ imbalance this season. The 58-year-old took over Cleveland in the summer of 2024 and led it to the second-best regular season record in the league (64:18) behind the eventual champions Oklahoma City Thunder (68:14), for which he was named Coach of the Year.
