Nancy at Celtic: Struggles Continue

Celtic’s new French coach, Wilfried Nancy, suffered a fourth defeat in as many matches on Wednesday at Dundee United (2-1) in the Scottish championship.

The Glasgow club, winners of 13 of the last 14 Premiership titles, had not suffered four defeats in a row since 1978.

Wednesday’s comes after defeats against Hearts in the league, AS Roma in the Europa League and St Mirren in the League Cup final.

Celtic opened the scoring in the first quarter of an hour then conceded two goals in the space of three minutes during the second half. Supporters demanded Nancy’s resignation from the visitors’ park, two weeks after the Frenchman’s arrival.

Earlier today, chairman Peter Lawwell announced he would step down later this year due to the “intolerable… level of insults and threats” made by disgruntled fans.

The club in the green and white jersey occupies second place in the championship, six points behind Hearts, with one more match to go.

Nancy, 48, arrived after a complicated start to the season for Celtic, who failed to qualify for the Champions League at the end of August. Tensions then arose with supporters, pushing former coach Brendan Rogers to resign at the end of October.

The French driver, who won the North American Football Championship (MLS) Cup in 2023 and the League Cup in 2024, took over after a brief interim period under Martin O’Neill.
